WHY SHOULD YOU BUY YOURSELF A GAS BAYONET?

Imagine running out of gas during a barbecue party. Or having to deal with a leaking gas heater in the middle of a cold winter night. Gas leaks might sound like a mild inconvenience, but it only takes one flammable material within touching distance to turn it into a disastrous explosion.

This is where a gas bayonet plays its role in keeping your household safe. A gas bayonet is a quick-release fitting that securely connects appliances (like heaters and cookers) to the gas supply, designed to prevent accidental gas leaks.

In general, a gas bayonet fitting has two main parts: the female socket is installed on the wall, while the male fitting is attached to the appliance.

TYPES OF GAS BAYONET

There are different types of gas bayonet in Australia. Each has its own benefits and specific use cases:

  • Bayonet Cap. A low pressure bayonet mainly used for household appliances like heaters and cookers. It comes with a dust cap that prevents dirt and dust from contaminating the bayonet.
  • Bayonet Nozzle. A more secure option, as its connector has two pins, compared to one in a bayonet cap. A bayonet nozzle can also handle higher gas pressure, making it suitable for outdoor appliances like BBQ grills.
  • Bayonet Double Adaptor. As the name suggests, it allows you to connect two appliances to a single outlet simultaneously. If you love camping but your van only has one power source, this is the type of gas bayonet you need.

We’ve mentioned the most common types of gas bayonet, but there are plenty more options you can find on the market. If you’re not sure which model is the right choice for you, we’re available for a free consultation!

HOW TO INSTALL A GAS BAYONET

1

Prepare the tools

Gather all the necessary equipment like wrenches, sealant tape, and screwdriver.
2

Turn off the gas supply

Locate the main gas valve and turn it off before starting the installation process.
3

Remove the old fitting

Disconnect the old fitting from the gas supply using a wrench, and clean any remaining debris.
4

Wrap your new fitting

Apply two or three lines of sealant tape on the threads of your new fitting to create a tight seal
5

Connect the new fitting

Attach the male fitting to the female gas outlet. Use a wrench to tighten the fitting. Once done, try turning on the gas supply to check for any leaks
6

Watch-out for gas leaks!

If there’s a gas leak, immediately turn off the gas supply and contact a professional gas fitter in your area.
